On 17 - 19 September 1988 a moderate magnetic disturbance which included a current sheet between anti-parallel fields was observed aboard Phobos 2 at ≡3900RE downstream from the Earth. One day before this a similar disturbance of the IMF had been recorded close to the Earth by the IMP-J satellite. On 13 to 14 September two suddenly disappearing filaments had been observed on the Sun, in the vicinity of the heliospheric current sheet and close to the heliospheric projection of the Earth. The space-time relations, structure, and intensity of the disturbance recorded with Phobos 2 suggest that is was caused by a slightly disturbed heliospheric streamer from the Sun. There were no indications that the geomagnetic wake or magnetospheric tail had contributed to this disturbance.
