The spreading of a strongly extended irregularity is analyzed on the basis of a numerical solution to diffusion equations for an inhomogeneous ionosphere. It is shown that the spreading of the irregularities is strongly affected by the inhomogeneity of the plasma (ionosphere). New effects are reported, such as splitting of irregularities, buoyancy of irregularities and their penetration into the magnetosphere, and changes in the shape of the irregularities.
