In 1966 it was shown that the giant radio galaxy 3C274 (M87) and the brightest quasar, 3C273, were almost exactly aligned across the central galaxy in the Virgo Cluster (M49). During the ensuing years additional evidence has accumulated that 3C273 (redshift, z = 0.158) is a member of the Virgo Cluster (z = 0.003). Now low surface brightness X-ray features recorded in the ROSAT all sky survey reveal that both M87 and 3C273 are physically connected back to M49.
