We discuss the meaning and the behaviour of the effective cosmological constant for nonminimally coupled scalar-tensor theories of gravity, giving sufficient (and for a class of couplings, also necessary) conditions to generalize the cosmic no-hair conjecture which holds in the minimally coupled case. Some relevant cosmological models are considered.
