The 'Numerical Mapping Technique' is applied to the reduction of astronomical plates for surface photometry. Density data, measured with a microdensitometer, is converted into an intensity scale. Large scale fluctuations of plate background, stars and emulsion defects are treated as noise source. The application of the Numerical Mapping Technique to the specific case of galaxy photometry, as presently carried out at Padova Observatory, is described. The main advantages of the new method are: faster and impersonal reduction procedure, higher efficiency in measuring low light levels, easier quantification of structural and photometric parameters, and more sophisticated data treatments.
