A first-order theory is used to study the role of radiative losses in dissipating compressive waves in the nonmagnetic chromosphere above the temperature minimum and hence in providing at least some of the mechanical heat required to maintain the temperature of the chromosphere. The radiative relaxation time, which is the key to dissipation, is shown to depend on wave amplitude, falling greatly for amplitudes exceeding 2 km/sec. The observed short-period rms velocities (about 2.4 km/sec) at the D1 level are adequate to provide dissipation balancing chromospheric emission losses. Predictions for the temperature-velocity phase difference and the phase velocity are compatible with observations.
