The paper presents an exploratory study of some of the possible consequences associated with the steep temperature gradients believed to exist in the transition zone between the chromosphere and corona. Two preliminary results were obtained: (1) the heat flux in the transition zone may be weakly electrostatically unstable and (2) the thermal electric field associated with the same steep temperature gradients will lead to the generation of copious numbers of nonthermal electrons 'boiling off' into the corona; these electrons may play an important role in heating the corona and may represent a source of radio noise.
