Massless two-dimensional fermion modes on a vortex may be paired and given masses, resulting in a variety of effects. One is that superconductivity is suppressed. Another is that cosmic strings with topologically determined charge per unit length are possible. Some simple mechanisms for mass generation are discussed and various other issues in fermion-vortex physics are dealt with.
