A survey of the azimuthal distribution of the distension field of dPi's at conjugate locations shows that the magnetospheric disturbance which causes it is of the odd harmonic 'field line deformation' type. The implication is that rapid field line compression in the premidnight sector initiates the oscillatory component. By using two stations which are on the same L-shell separated by about 3 hr local time, it is demonstrated that the temporal pattern of distension directions has spatial significance.
