We propose obtaining low-resolution LWR and SWP spectra and some high-resolution LWR spectra of representative bright RV Tauri and yellow semiregular variables between phases of mid-rising light and maximum (when acoustic effects of pulsation are seen to be strongest), to probe their chromospheric and possible transition region structure. This will provide important information on the role of acoustic energy transport in the atmospheres of low mass, metal-deficient supergiants. We want to examine the emission profiles of the Mg II h and k lines in detail, for velocity asymmetries, circumstellar absorption, variability of envelope conditions, and an estimate of absolute magnitude through a form of the Wilson-Bappu effect applied to these lines.
