The frequency-time spectra in the VLF range of the electromagnetic waves observed onboard GEOS-1 is examined. A correlator having a frequency resolution of 50 Hz and a time resolution of 30 ms in one magnetic and one electric component simultaneously was used. Computer analysis was applied to distinguish between the two dominant emissions, hiss and chorus, as well as to display the complete spectra. It is shown that chorus is almost always associated with hiss, although one or the other may be dominating in intensity. Further, on two occasions the crossing of the plasma regions was found to be associated with characteristic enhancements of VLF noise, thus validating presently admitted theories of the self-consistent equilibrium between cyclotron waves and electrons.
