Intrinsic oxygen fugacity measurements on minerals from mafic rocks that cool at pressures greater than one atmosphere indicate that the Earth's interior is in a more reduced state than are the erupting tholeiitic magmas. This review suggests that specific oxidation-reduction equilibria within magmas and between magma and vapour can account for the characteristic oxygen fugacities of most lavas. A model is presented to illustrate how an initially highly reduced mafic magma may oxidize by degassing of C-species in the conditions of the shallow crust.
