Clouds of neutral Li and Ba were released into the solar wind from the German Ion Release Module as part of the active phase of the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers mission. The solar wind flow is deflected by the ionization of the clouds, and a magnetic cavity is formed. The minimum Larmor radii of the solar wind protons are of the order of the interaction region's size, while the radii of the picked-up release ions is one or two orders of magnitude larger respectively for Li and Ba, indicating the need for a hybrid description in which the release ions respond as particles to the magnetic field structures supported by a charge-neutralizing electron fluid. The existence of high proton flows in the interaction region requires at least two ion populations.
