Observational data concerning optical and thermal properties of Mars during global dust storms are generalized. Methods and results of determining the real part of refraction index nr and the average radius r0 of cloud particles during the storms are critically analysed. Observational data concerning the period of cleaning the atmosphere are used to evaluate possible values of the minimum and maximum radii of a polydisperse system of particles which are able to give an essential contribution to optical properties of the atmosphere. It is shown that up to now the most reliable method of determination of nr and r0 is the polarimetric one. It is recommended to use nr = 1.59 and r0 = 8 μm in normal-logarithmic law of particle size distribution with dispersion 0.1 for model calculations of optical properties of the Martian atmosphere during dust storms. Calculations of scattering matrix elements may be executed by integration within a limited range of particle sizes, 2 μm ≤ r ≤ 30 μm.
