The rationale behind THEMIS (a heliographic telescope for the study of solar magnetism and atmospheric instabilities), to be installed at the Teide Observatory on the Canary Islands, is presented. Particular attention is given to the instrument concept, the optical scheme (the Ritchey-Chretien telescope, the transfer optics, and the spectrographs), and correction for atmospheric turbulence.
