It is shown in a simple analytical way that solutions of the ambipolar plasma diffusion equation for the F-region naturally include Chapman type distributions. The exact solution of the continuity equation for the steady night ionosphere at delta = 1/2 and p = 0 has Chapman type form. For arbitrary delta and p the WKB method in the zeroth approximation yielded a formula for calculating the nighttime N profile, which in form coincides with the well-known Chapman expression for the daytime N profile.
