A radial integration formula is given for use when numerically computing the extinction integral from an Epstein representation of the density scale height. A slightly less accurate but quicker procedure is obtained by using a simplified expression which contains a step scale describing the density variation by comparing it with a fixed reference height. A horizontal density gradient can be taken into account by applying another Epstein step to the reference density.
