The knowledge gained about the outer planets by the Pioneer and Voyager probes is summarized, and an overview is given of the scientific aims, instruments, and organization of the NASA Galileo and Cassini missions to Jupiter and to Saturn and Titan, respectively. The individual experiments are listed in tables, and extensive diagrams, drawings, graphs, and photographs are provided. Topics addressed include the importance of giant-planet studies for theoretical models of solar-system evolution, the thermal structure of the Titan atmosphere, the rings of Saturn, the icy moons of Saturn, the Saturn atmosphere and ionosphere, and unusual features of the Saturnian magnetosphere.
