The observation of apparent ring structures around Nova Per 1901 after its appearance is discussed, with a focus on their interpretation as light echos, and the similar structures found around SN 1987A are considered. The first reports of the rings are recalled; the hypotheses advanced by astronomers are reviewed; and the fundamental principles of the light-echo model of Kapteyn (1901) are outlined. The three-dimensional distribution of dust clouds near Nova Per is then characterized by analyzing the early ring observations, and the relationship between this distribution and the nova outburst is explained in terms of the common-envelope model. Similarities and differences between the light echos of Nova Per and SN 1987A are then described.
