In this paper, we discuss the gravity wave (GW) dissipative compressible polarization relations derived in Vadas and Fritts (2005). We show how GWs with large vertical wavelengths lambda_z have different polarization relations than those with small lambda_z. Since GWs in the thermosphere have large lambda_z, the compressible (not Boussinesq) polarization relations are essential for proper analysis of their phase relationships. We also show how the polarization relations are altered when a GW is dissipating. Finally, we apply this theory to recent nightime observations of GWs observed by a high-resolution Fabry Perot common volume experiment near Poker Flat, Alaska in January, 2010. We also compare with daytime and nighttime Poker Flat ISR results taken at the same time.
