The properties of the absorption features in the central part of the elliptical galaxy NGC 4696 are reported. Blue and red CCD images reveal a well-defined absorbing lane in the central 10 arcsec of the galaxy, encircling the nucleus by more than 180 degrees. The color index is largest in the middle of the lane, rising to a maximum in three different spots which are redder than the galaxy by E(B-R') = 0.19. The nucleus itself is redder than the surrounding galaxy by E(B-R') of about 0.11 or E(B-V) of about 0.04. An absorption feature with E(B-R') of about 0.09 and E(B-V) of about 0.04 extends from the nucleus in the direction northwest out to the lane. No recent suppliers of dust for the galaxy have been found among the faint extended objects in the CCD frame. There seems to be a close relation between the dust lane and emission line filaments recently detected in the galaxy.
