Mechanisms of X-ray emission from white dwarfs and neutron stars are reviewed in the context of a discussion of radiative transfer processes. The values of the relevant plasma parameters are summarized, and Comptonization processes in nonmagnetic plasmas are discussed. The effects of magnetic fields on radiative transfer are considered, using as examples the energy-dependent pulse profiles and the spectra observed for X-ray pulsars. An observational result of superhigh luminosities of X-ray bursts in excess of the Eddington limit is presented. Difficulties in accounting for such events if the bursts are triggered by nuclear flash are mentioned.
