It is noted that Cannon (1974) has examined the consequences of a possible resonance between Chandler motion and the seasonal forcing function acting on the earth, and has suggested that there may be a causal connection between this resonance and the onset of continental drift. Cannon's calculations are reanalyzed, and it is shown that his estimate of the energy dissipated at the time of resonance is in error by at least two orders of magnitude. The present analysis indicates that the actual energy available is quite insignificant in comparison with other known energy-dissipation processes. It is concluded that the Chandler annual resonance is unlikely to be a trigger for the onset of continental drift.
