The formation of spirals and the correlation between rotation and star formation are examined. The density-wave theory of Lin and Shu, which states that the formation of the stars is triggered by a propagating disturbance (density wave), is described. It is observed that this theory is useful for explaining the structure of symmetrical twin-armed spirals, galaxies with more than two arms, and patchy filamentary arms. The proposal of Seiden and Gerola that supernovae cause spiral structures is discussed, and it is noted that the hypothesis successfully describes the formation of irregular spirals.
