The origin of inaccuracies in some Q.L. and Q.T. approximations to Appleton's magneto-ionic equations is described. Some of the approximate equations in common use contain errors which can become serious under certain conditions, especially near the gyro-frequency. Valid approximations are given for the complex refractive index and polarization under Q.L. and Q.T. conditions. Further approximations are given for non-deviative and deviative conditions.
