The necessary conditions that must be satisfied by the modern theory of the slow decay of sunspots are formulated. The approach here is to introduce a rational distribution of the magnetic field in the sunspot and in the nearby photosphere. This distribution is given with an accuracy up to certain unknown functions of time and is incorporated in the diffusion equation, whose integration yields the radial-velocity field; the natural electrodynamic boundary conditions both at infinity and at the spot-photosphere boundary are applied. This approach makes it possible to derive the slow-decay law.
