In magnetospheric simulation models, the ionosphere balances the Maxwell stress of the solar wind and the magnetotail by ion-neutral drag. This process is responsible for the formation of the magnetotail and the field aligned current systems. We discuss how the magnetospheric plasma parameters and the field aligned currents are used to estimate the ionospheric conductance needed to determine the convection potential. Simulation examples often show a good correspondence between the simulation synthetic aurora and polar euv images. We will show a number of interesting examples. In these instances, it is possible to directly relate the observed aurora to its magnetospheric source region and to possible responsible processes occuring there.
