By using observations from the Polar Ionospheric X-ray Imaging Experiment (PIXIE) and the Ultraviolet Imager (UVI) on board the Polar satellite we derive the electron distributions from 100 ev to 100 keV and present global maps of the 5 min average precipitating electron energy fluxes with a spatial resolution of ~700 km. We show the global energy deposition by electron precipitation during seven substorms from 1997 and examine how the different components of the electron distribution behave throughout the substorms. We examine how the auroral electron energy flux relates to the magnetic indices, AE, AL and AU. We also assess the fraction of the solar wind energy transferred into the magnetosphere prior to and during the substorms that was deposited into the ionosphere by electron precipitation during each event. Finally we show typical derived electrons spectra at different local times during the different phases of substorms.
