An experimental study of the formation and characteristics of a plane pinch current sheet and associated magnetic reconnection processes was performed. Six magnetic probes were inserted into the current sheet and oscillographs were taken of the magnetic field. Reconnection was found to be a two-stage process: quasi-stationary, when the plane current sheet breaks into two, oppositely directed magnetic fields; and an explosive stage, when inductive electric fields and electron acceleration occurs. Onset of the explosive phase is signaled by an abrupt increase in the By component and a decrease in the tangential Bx component. It is concluded that magnetic energy is dissipated during reconnection, which may be significant in modeling solar flares.
