This article presents the case for a more unified description of phenomena in which the second law of thermodynamics is built into the dynamical laws that ultimately determine the macroscopic level on which irreversibility is a familiar feature. The use of statistical mechanics to study the nature of entropy in systems far from equilibrium is addressed. The roles of classical and quantum systems in this area are considered.
