We propose XMM-Newton observations from eclipse ingress to out of eclipse of the high-mass X-ray binary LMC X-4, which represents one of the most extreme cases of mass-transfer in such systems. With the high sensitivity of the XMM/RGS gratings in the range 0.35-2.5 keV, we will be able to detect and identify all the fluorescent emission and discrete recombination lines at low energies. This will allow us to constrain the geometry and temperature of the ionisation zone. Furthermore, in combination with the large effective area of the XMM/EPIC cameras we will be able to address the question whether the poorly studied soft excess is of thermal origin or if it consists of blending of several lines.
