We propose an X-ray survey of the Taurus Molecular Cloud (TMC) as an important element of a comprehensive investigation of this prototypical site of star formation. This project breaks new ground by combining several large surveys: The XMM-Newton survey will be accompanied by deep optical and NIR surveys conducted at CFHT and millimeter CO surveys underway at Nagoya/Japan, thus addressing many facets of the physics of star and planet formation. The TMC is the nearest (140 pc) extensively star-forming region, representative of the isolated/nonclustered mode of star formation. It covers all critical evolutionary stages relevant for the formation of stars, brown dwarfs (BD), and planets that will be studied in this combined survey.
