The first observation of Mars with Chandra has clearly shown that this planet is an X-ray source (Dennerl 2002), mainly due to fluorescent scattering of solar X-rays in its upper atmosphere. An additional source of X-rays was indicated by a faint, extended halo with a different X-ray spectrum. The statistical significance of the halo, however, was only 4 sigma. With the high throughput and spectroscopic capabilities of XMM-Newton, a more detailed investigation of the halo will be possible, which is most likely caused by charge exchange interactions between highly charged heavy solar wind ions and exospheric gas around Mars. If this can be confirmed, it will be the first direct, unambiguous detection of such a mechanism in a planetary exosphere.
