There is now strong evidence that the cluster gas mass fraction (f_gas M_gas/M_tot) is dependent on the X-ray temperature (T_X). However, there is very large scatter in f_gas measurements, especially in the cool cluster regime. We propose XMM spectroscopy of two clusters with anomalous (one high, one low) f_gas values. We will measure pertinent quantities (gas temperature, density, abundances) up to at least half the virial radius. We will then calculate the gas mass, total mass profile and concentration parameter and entropy, and investigate the interplay between these quantities. If the scatter in measured f_gas values is real, this will point to a strong influence of the individual cluster formation history on observed properties.
