We propose to obtain energy and power spectra of M81 X-9 with XMM-Newton, to determine whether the accreting black hole's mass exceeds the stellar regime. High-resolution spectroscopy with the RGS will be used to search for absorption or emission lines, which we suggest can be a signature of an intermediate mass black hole, since their environments should be less ionized than those of stellar mass black holes.We will search for quasi-periodic oscillations in the EPIC data to constrain the source size and set an upper limit to the black hole mass. In addition, we will propose for radio observations to determine whether the emission from a jet can be found.
