Scientific paper

The combination of X-ray and radio observations of the nearby spiral galaxies M51, M83 and NGC 1566 is used to investigate the interstellar medium. Assuming a Raymond-Smith plasma, the electron densities of the X-ray emitting diffuse gas in the galactic halos are too low to explain the depolarisation of the radio emission at longer wavelengths. It is possible to calculate the plasma β, i.e. the ratio between the energy densities of the thermal plasma and the magnetic field in the halos. The magnetic fields are important for the dynamic of the hot gas and might heat it via MHD waves or reconnection processes.
