Magnetic fields in spiral galaxies are investigated by polarized radio continuum emission. On large scales, the field structure almost precisely agrees with the optical spiral pattern. The small-scale field is aligned along compression regions (delineated by dust lanes) or in "magnetic arms" between optical arms, whereas the fields are highly tangled in the optical spiral arms. In flocculent galaxies with low star-formation activity, the fields are possibly the dominant force in the formation of gas and dust concentrations. In granddesign spiral galaxies, neither the density-wave theory or the dynamo theory alone can explain the variety of observations; combined models are required. The field structure is not simply a byproduct of spiral density waves, but an essential agent for the formation of stars and spiral arms.
