By searching for the (1,1) and (2,2) inversion transitions of ammonia towards the densest parts of the Lupus molecular clouds, we will be able to estimate the kinetic temperature of the molecular gas. Recent CO maps of the Lupus complex suggest a very low excitation temperature, 8-10K, but ammonia observations are required to constrain the kinetic temperature. This is a pilot proposal to estimate the physical conditions in Lupus, to demonstrate the capabilities of the Tidbinbilla antenna for ammonia mapping, and to make the case for the implementation of a dedicated on-the-fly mapping mode.
