Several simplifying features may be introduced into the structure of the very early universe by adoption of the Zeldovich hypothesis of a stiff equation of state at high energy. It is argued that the initial state of the universe was isotropic and quiescent; in addition, large-amplitude gravitational waves, random velocities, vorticity and magnetic fields could arise. An explanation for the microwave background structure of the universe may also be developed by considering the Zeldovich hypothesis.
