Black Holes from Stars to Galaxies -- Across the Range of Masses. Edited by V. Karas and G. Matt. Proceedings of IAU Symposium #
Computer Science
Scientific paper
We present results from an HST imaging survey of 143 early-type galaxies in the Virgo and Fornax Clusters. Using deep HST images in the F475W (g) and F850LP (z) bandpasses obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), we describe the observational properties of the central stellar components in these galaxies, including their distributions in size, luminosity, color, velocity dispersion and total mass. Our survey reveals that the formation of early-type galaxies of low- and intermediate-mass is often -- but not always -- accompanied by the formation of a compact stellar nucleus. We explore possible connections between these nuclei and the supermassive black holes that reside in the brightest and most massive galaxies.
