Scientific paper

Variations in the temperature, density, and composition of the earth's atmosphere at heights above 100 km are investigated. The daily variation in density is correlated with the diurnal temperature variation; the latter shows an eight-hour oscillation superimposed on a larger 24-hr variation. The geomagnetic effect, the semiannual density variation, the seasonal-latitudinal variation in atmospheric composition, traveling gravity waves, and upper atmosphere density models are also discussed.
