Under certain circumstances the slope of a linear regression of two variables measured with error may be accurately determined if an auxiliary variable is available. Equating the result to a second estimator based on error variances then allows limits to be set on the error dispersions and on the intrinsic scatter in the linear relation. The results are illustrated with simulated data and applied to a two-color diagram based on observations of Cepheids.
