Aspects of the New Technology Telescope (NTT), whose development constitutes a new direction in telescope development away from ever-larger mirrors, are discussed. The requirements for the NTT are addressed, and its active optics is examined. The compactness and precision resulting from the optics are considered, and the characteristics of the building which will house the NTT are described.
