It is shown that the Newtonian gravitational force between two particles can be deduced from the Einstein-Sciama force relationship without any cosmological hypothesis. The interpretation of the Newtonian gravitational force offered here permits an understanding of why the force between masses of the same sign is attractive instead of repulsive.
