Consideration is given to the primary statistical characteristics of field-aligned currents associated with substorm expansion and recovery phases. The study is based on magnetic field observations of the Triad satellite. Particular attention is given to: (1) the locations of large-scale regions of field-aligned currents, (2) variations in the average latitude width and center location of these regions, (3) a comparison of the current density of the regions, (4) the local times at which the largest field-aligned current densities occur and the values they have, (5) the average total amount of field-aligned current flowing into the ionosphere in comparison to the current flow away from the ionosphere, (6) a three-region flow pattern of field-aligned current, and (7) the alignment and behavior of current sheets and field-aligned currents along the boundary of the auroral oval.
