Scientific paper

We propose to exploit the unique set of ACS multi-color images in the Northern GOODS field in conjunction with a new ground-based database of infrared photometry and high quality Keck spectroscopy. The overall goal is to correlate the dynamical and photometric properties of disks and bulges in the context of popular models for galaxy assembly. The resolved colors and physical scales of bulges in the redshift range 0.3100 z=1 disks will be analyzed with extended rotation curves to address the important question of whether stellar disks were mature and established at early epochs. The program represents a concerted attempt to address the origin of key components which form the basis of the Hubble sequence of galaxies.
