Experimental data are presented on the time dependence of the intensity of galactic cosmic rays in free near-earth space since 1958. This dependence is empirically correlated with the eleven-year solar cycle. The sudden violation of this correlation with solar activity in 1971-1972 is interpreted as a new phenomenon of cosmic-ray modulation arising as a result of changes in the overall solar magnetic field during this period of observation.
