The work described supports the validity of diffraction focusing of X- and gamma-radiation as a means of increasing detection sensitivity. Initial diffraction measurements of highly oriented graphite showed that the diffraction efficiency of the graphite was greatly superior to that of other crystals evaluated below 60 keV. Measurements made on an array of oriented graphite crystals shaped in a focusing geometry revealed excellent ability to focus incident X- and gamma-radiation, and indicated good agreement between measured performance and the performance predicted from diffractometer X-ray measurements of individual samples. A laboratory focuser is described which is to be evaluated over the energy range from 20 to 60 keV to provide large system performance data.
