The propagation of mid-ocean ridges is examined by means of centrifuge models using non-linear materials as analogues of lithospheric rocks. Fractures in the upper brittle layer propagate laterally and link together in different coalescence patterns. The geometries of the cracks developed in the initial stage of extension control their subsequent growth and coalescence.
