A brief review of studies on atmospheric tides is presented, with an emphasis on theory and on certain recent observations. The classical theory is mentioned, and excitation mechanisms are reviewed, including Sibert's (1961) and Butler and Small's (1963) discussion of the thermal excitation of semidiurnal tides, as well as Lindzen's (1968) consideration of both diurnal and semidiurnal tide excitation. Data are presented on the eastward wind velocity in the stratosphere, obtained by VHF Doppler radar at Jicamarca. It is concluded that, on the whole, theoretical studies are ahead of the experimental ones, but large radar observations will make it possible for experimental studies to catch up with theory.
